This is two photographs joined together. They were taken from the old White Hart Hotel which is now where the arches are. The buildings in the centre including the Market House were demolished in 1865. The Clock Tower was completed in 1877.

The John Hampden statue was unveiled on 27 June 1912. It was moved from its original site in 1988 after the area was pedestrianised. The George Hotel closed in 1921 and in 1935 it was demolished to be replaced by Montague Burton's new shop.
